How to Prepare Your Child for an AI Future: What Indian Students Need to Learn in 2026

By Devesh Lathi, Founder, Futurowise.com

In February 2024, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang told the World Government Summit in Dubai: “Everybody in the world is now a programmer. This is the miracle of artificial intelligence.” The programming language of the future, he said, “is human.”

For Indian parents, that raises a hard question. If AI can write code, essays and research summaries, what should a 14-year-old actually be learning? I hear some version of this question from parents almost every week. My answer is simple: not less learning, but a different kind.

1. The Skills That Matter Are Shifting Fast

The World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2025 estimates that 39 percent of workers’ core skills will change between 2025 and 2030. It projects 170 million new jobs and 92 million displaced, a net gain of 78 million. The fastest-growing skills are AI and big data, followed by networks and cybersecurity, and technology literacy.

Another finding from the report gets less attention. Analytical thinking remains the most sought-after core skill, with seven in ten companies calling it essential. Creative thinking, resilience, and curiosity and lifelong learning are all rising in importance.

Read alongside Huang’s remark, the message is clear. If the programming language is now human, then thinking clearly, asking precise questions and judging whether an answer is right become technical skills. A child who can use AI to analyse data, test an idea and explain the result will have a real advantage over one who only memorises.

2. Grades Open Doors. Projects Get Students Through Them.

Before founding Futurowise, I spent a decade in global education and scholarship access, reviewing applications from students across India. One pattern stood out. Strong grades got students shortlisted. What set the winners apart was something they had built or learned on their own: a research project, an app, a small business, a dataset they had analysed.

That pattern has held at Futurowise, where we have mentored more than 500 students and published over 100 student projects. The students who grow fastest are rarely the ones with the highest marks. They are the ones who pick a real problem, get stuck, use AI to get unstuck, and finish.

Indian school education is changing, but board exams still reward recall more than building. That gap is where parents can make the biggest difference.

3.What Parents Can Do Now

First, change how your child uses AI. Using a chatbot to finish homework builds nothing. Using it to build a small tool, analyse a cricket dataset, or draft an essay and then critique it builds judgment. Ask your child to explain why the AI’s answer is right, or where it is wrong.

Second, ask for proof of work, not just certificates. A finished project, however small, teaches more than a stack of completion badges. It also tells a college admissions reader far more about who your child is.

Third, choose the learning format with care. Large platforms such as Coursera are excellent for university-level and professional learning, with courses from leading universities and companies, and they suit self-motivated learners working at their own pace. Most school students need something different: shorter timelines, live mentors and a clear outcome. That is why Futurowise programmes run as 2 to 4 week cohorts in which every student completes and publishes a project. Neither model is better in general. The right choice depends on your child’s age and how they learn best.

Fourth, protect time for curiosity. The World Economic Forum lists curiosity and lifelong learning among the rising skills for a reason. The tools will keep changing. A child who enjoys figuring things out will keep up.

The Bottom Line

Preparing a child for an AI future does not mean turning every student into a programmer. Huang’s point is that AI has already made programmers of us all. The real advantage will belong to students who can think clearly, question what machines tell them, and build something useful with the answers.

Parents looking for a practical starting point can explore Futurowise’s Foundations of Agentic AI programme, where students in Grades 9 to 12 build a working AI project: https://www.futurowise.com/programs/agentic-ai
