Delhi Hotel Fire Claims 21 Lives in Malviya Nagar; Foreign Nationals Among Victims

New Delhi | June 3, 2026

A devastating fire at a hotel and restaurant building in South Delhi’s Malviya Nagar on Tuesday morning claimed at least 21 lives, making it one of the deadliest fire incidents reported in the national capital in recent years. Officials confirmed that several of the victims were foreign nationals from African countries, while many others were reportedly asleep when the blaze broke out.

The Delhi hotel fire occurred in a building that housed the Lemon Green restaurant and Flourish Stay Bed & Breakfast near Max Hospital in Saket. Rescue teams rushed to the site soon after emergency services received distress calls, but the intensity of the flames and thick smoke complicated evacuation efforts.

Authorities said the death toll from the Delhi hotel fire may rise further as several injured individuals remain in critical condition at nearby hospitals.

Rescue Operations Launched Immediately After Fire Alert

According to Delhi Police, information regarding the fire was received at approximately 8:48 am. Local police personnel, firefighters, and emergency responders were immediately deployed to the location.

DCP (South) Anant Mittal confirmed the casualties and said rescue and relief operations began as soon as officials reached the scene.

“At 8.48 am, information was received regarding a fire at Flourish Stay B&B, Malviya Nagar. Local police staff immediately reached the spot and commenced rescue, evacuation, and relief operations,” Mittal said.

Visuals from the site showed dense black smoke rising from the building as firefighters worked to contain the blaze. Several people were rescued from upper floors, while ambulances transported the injured to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Officials stated that the Delhi hotel fire spread rapidly through the premises, leaving many occupants trapped inside. Preliminary reports suggest that a significant number of guests were asleep when the fire erupted, reducing their chances of escaping safely.

Foreign Nationals Among Victims as Investigation Begins

Police sources said multiple victims in the Delhi hotel fire were foreign tourists, including individuals from African nations who were staying at the bed-and-breakfast facility. Authorities are currently working to verify the identities of all deceased and injured persons.

The presence of international guests has prompted coordination between local authorities and relevant diplomatic missions. Officials have not yet released a complete list of victims pending formal identification procedures and notification of families.

Investigators have also begun examining the cause of the Delhi hotel fire. While the exact reason behind the blaze remains unclear, forensic teams and fire department officials are conducting a detailed inspection of the site.

Experts are expected to assess whether the building complied with fire safety regulations, including the availability of emergency exits, firefighting equipment, and evacuation protocols.

Questions Raised Over Fire Safety Compliance

The tragic Delhi hotel fire has once again brought attention to fire safety standards in commercial and hospitality establishments across the capital. Safety experts have repeatedly emphasized the importance of regular inspections, functioning fire alarms, and emergency preparedness measures in hotels and guest accommodations.

Authorities are likely to review safety records associated with the affected property as part of the ongoing investigation. Officials have not yet commented on whether any violations were previously reported at the premises.

Witnesses described scenes of panic as guests and staff attempted to flee through smoke-filled corridors. Rescue personnel continued search operations for several hours to ensure no one remained trapped inside the building.

The Delhi hotel fire has also triggered concerns among local residents and business owners in the area, many of whom gathered near the site as emergency crews worked to control the situation.

As investigations continue, authorities have urged the public to rely only on official updates and avoid speculation regarding the cause of the incident.

The Delhi hotel fire stands as a grim reminder of the importance of stringent safety measures in public buildings. With 21 deaths confirmed and several people still undergoing treatment, officials remain focused on rescue, identification, and determining the circumstances that led to the tragedy. Further details are expected as the inquiry progresses and authorities complete their assessment of the incident.
