The research offers valuable insights into how tomorrow’s doctors view AI, the opportunities it presents, and the challenges that medical education must overcome to prepare healthcare professionals for a technology-driven future.
Preparing Future Doctors for the AI Revolution
Healthcare is evolving at an unprecedented pace. From assisting physicians in interpreting medical images to predicting disease outcomes and improving clinical decision-making, Artificial Intelligence is becoming an essential tool rather than a futuristic concept.
Recognizing this transformation, Dr. Shamin Eabenson and his research team conducted a cross-sectional study involving 195 medical students to understand their knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding AI in medicine. The findings revealed a strong enthusiasm among future healthcare professionals for integrating AI into medical education and clinical practice.
Medical Students Welcome AI in Healthcare
One of the most encouraging findings from the study was that 83.5% of medical students believed Artificial Intelligence would improve medical training, while 75.3% felt AI could assist doctors in analyzing patient data for more accurate diagnoses. Additionally, 67.1% believed AI could significantly improve healthcare access, particularly in areas where specialist doctors are unavailable.
These findings demonstrate that the next generation of doctors recognizes AI as a supportive technology capable of enhancing—not replacing—clinical expertise.
Students also acknowledged AI’s potential in improving patient compliance, analyzing medical records, predicting disease prognosis, and recommending personalized treatment strategies, reflecting growing confidence in AI-assisted healthcare.
Bridging the Gap Between Awareness and Practical Training
Despite their positive perception, the research identified an important gap in medical education.
More than two-thirds of participants reported that they had never received formal AI training during medical school, and many had limited exposure to AI tools during their academic journey. At the same time, an overwhelming majority believed that doctors should receive structured education on both the practical applications and ethical challenges of Artificial Intelligence in healthcare.
According to Dr. Shamin Eabenson, this highlights an urgent need to modernize medical curricula by introducing AI education from the early years of MBBS. Future doctors must understand not only how AI works but also how to use it responsibly while maintaining patient trust, privacy, and ethical standards.

While students expressed excitement about AI, the study also revealed genuine concerns surrounding data privacy, patient confidentiality, ethical decision-making, and the possibility of doctors becoming overly dependent on technology. Many participants believed that clear regulatory frameworks and ethical guidelines would be essential as AI becomes more deeply integrated into healthcare systems.
